Rose Cascio
Major(s): Human Biology
College: Thurgood Marshall College
UC San Diego graduation year: 2025
Which research programs/experiences have you been a part of?
- Eureka! Scholarship: Summer 2024
What are you researching (or did you do in the past)?
I research virology and innate immunology in Dr. Matthew Daugherty's lab. I research novel innate immune sensors of viral activity within host cells.

Why and how did you decide to get involved in undergraduate research?
I got involved in research in my freshman year because I knew that UCSD was known for being a groundbreaking research institution, and I was advised to take advantage of those opportunities. I wanted to explore my interests and broaden my sphere of learning.
What has been the most exciting/interesting thing you've discovered through the research?
In my years of research, I have discovered a passion for research and have found the most exciting part to be the new data that I can generate that has never been seen before. There is a thrill to knowing you are the first person to see the results you are creating.

What did you gain from the Undergraduate Research Hub?
Through this program I have gained more autonomy and independence in my research. I also have discovered a deeper understanding of my research because of the full time immersion this program provides.
What advice would you give to students starting research?
The advice I would give any student starting research is to ask as many questions as possible.
What are your future goals?
I plan to attend medical school or an MD-PhD program in 2026.
