I Am a Researcher
Grisha Tamazyan
Major(s): Molecular and Cell Biology
College: Eleanor Roosevelt
UC San Diego graduation year: 2026
Which research programs/experiences have you been a part of?
What are you researching (or did you do in the past)?
I am currently interning at Integrated Space Stem Cell Orbital Research Center, a collaboration project between NASA, SpaceX, and Sanford Stem Cell Institute, where under the mentorship of Dr. Muotri we study the effects of spaceflight on human brain through stem cells engineered human brain organoids. Previously, I have conducted research on Genetic Editing within the School of Medicine.
Why and how did you decide to get involved in undergraduate research?
I decided to get involved in undergraduate research because I wanted to apply my passion for problem-solving to real-world challenges in medicine and life sciences. The opportunity to contribute to innovative projects while learning from experts in the field felt like the perfect way to deepen my knowledge and make a tangible impact.
What has been the most exciting/interesting thing you've discovered through your research?
The most exciting part of my research has been realizing what it truly means to be a scientist—embracing curiosity, tackling uncertainty, and finding joy in even the smallest breakthroughs. Designing and executing experiments that could one day contribute to curing genetic diseases has shown me the profound impact of asking the right questions and persevering through challenges.
What did you gain from this program/experience?
Through the TRELS Summer Research program, I gained invaluable hands-on experience in conducting independent research, from designing experiments to presenting findings at a professional conference. Beyond technical skills, I developed greater confidence in my ability to tackle complex scientific challenges and a deeper appreciation for the collaborative nature of discovery.
What advice would you give to students starting research?
My advice to students starting research is to stay persistent and curious. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but approaching them with curiosity and determination will not only help you find solutions but also make the journey of discovery incredibly rewarding.
What are your future plans?
I plan to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, focusing on cancer research in the lab. My goal is to contribute to fundamental discoveries in cancer biology, particularly in understanding the molecular mechanisms behind cancer progression, with the aim of advancing more effective treatments and preventive strategies.
