How did you hear about the Goldwater scholarship?

I first heard about it when I was looking through the URH website as a freshman. Then I read more about it on the Goldwater foundation website.

What interested you in applying for it?

I’ve been passionate about research for many years and the Goldwater seemed like a great opportunity to practice writing about research and get recognized for it. After reading about what characteristics the Goldwater foundation is looking for in scholars, I felt that I could have a shot at receiving it. I also looked at the application from the URH website and it seemed doable.

The application takes a good amount of effort but it’s not daunting! I started by looking at the PDF of a past application from the URH website before it was officially opened, because the foundation keeps the application relatively consistent. Knowing what the different sections of the application are early on helped with thinking and planning. I also went through every relevant page on the Goldwater foundation website to understand the application and the foundation’s mission better. I also thought about who my letter writers could be and reached out to them early on. If you give yourself enough time to think, write, and revise, you’ll be able to complete the application without enduring too much stress. It’s natural to have questions during the process  – I definitely did. I highly recommend reaching out to the URH team as they have years of experience helping students receive the scholarship.

How has the scholarship benefited you?

Receiving the Goldwater meant that I was able to effectively communicate my enthusiasm for a research career through my application. This made me very proud and fueled my motivation for pursuing this career path. Also, the scholarship amount of $7500 will help support my education costs for next year. Another lesser-known benefit of the scholarship is becoming part of the Goldwater community. I’m thrilled to be a part of this network and participate in community activities with other scholars, including a mentor-mentee program. In addition, the application process for the Goldwater gave me the chance to reflect on my research and career goals and write about them, which will be helpful for medical/graduate school applications.

What advice do you have for others interested in applying for this scholarship (or others)?

Don’t be afraid to apply for the Goldwater or other scholarships that you’re eligible for. It’s natural to feel intimidated, especially for prestigious scholarships. However, if you plan well and give yourself enough time to work on it, you can prepare an application you’re proud of. Also, there isn’t really a downside to applying, so just take a chance!

Make sure your application reflects your voice. Be authentic and show original thinking. It’s important to discuss what you’ll be writing with your PI and get feedback on it, but I think it’s equally important to avoid over-editing.

Ask for help! Our undergraduate research hub has a lot of resources and a wonderful team that is very willing to meet with students and answer their questions. I spoke with Dr. Tsai Neri when I was considering applying to the Goldwater and again during the process. My meeting with Dr. Artis was really helpful in gaining more insight into what the foundation is looking for in our writing. Many of our past scholars, including myself, would also be happy to help our peers out.
