RSRI Frequently Asked Questions

Matching with a Faculty Mentor

Should I reach out to faculty members to increase my chances of a match?

No. Do not reach out to faculty mentors.

The RSRI Coordinator works diligently to match as many interested regents scholars as possible.

Once a match has been made, the scholar and professor will be notified of the next steps.

I wasn't matched my first quarter at UC San Diego; can I be matched starting my second quarter?

Maybe. Sometimes matches are possible starting the winter quarter based on the needs of the student, professor, both, or availability of professors. This is not a guaranteed option, but it is a possibility for some students. Speak with the RSRI coordinator if you have any questions about your circumstances.

A late match is only considered for students in their first year and who submitted the application on-time.

I wasn't matched with a mentor my first year at UC San Diego; can I be matched for my second year?

Unfortunately, no, second year Regents Scholars cannot be matched for RSRI. Research opportunities are limited, so they are only offered on a first-come first-serve during the students' first year at UC San Diego.

However, there are many other research opportunities on campus, through the Undergraduate Research Hub and across campus. The RSRI coordinator can help you find the best opportunities that suit your needs.

Registering for 99H

How do I register for 99H?

General information
  • Read about the 99 Special Studies classes and how to apply here. The system for requesting a Special Studies course is different that WebReg.
  • It is very important to meet with your faculty mentor before you fill out the request.
  • Deadlines: Double check the deadline for your department/college. If there is no specific deadline on their website, then they most likely follow the university deadline, which is typically the end of the second week of the quarter.
    • Important! This is the deadline for when the request needs to finish processing, not the deadline to start the process.
  • Biology students: Students who will will take the 99 through the School of Biological Sciences must apply online through the Department.
    • Note that deadline for enrolling in BILD 99 are earlier than independent study courses in other departments; the BILD 99 enrollment deadline is always during the quarter before the course will actually be in effect.

RSRI specific information
