Research Opportunities
“UCSD undergraduates have presented their research results at local, regional and national professional meetings; they have been co-authors on published research papers, and experienced the joy of discovery and the frustration of challenging experiments.” – Dr. Georgia Sadler, Professor, UCSD Department of Surgery

Each year hundreds of UCSD undergraduates take part in research through Special Studies Courses.  Below is general information on such courses and how to enroll in them.  (Be sure to check with individual departments offering a specific course to see if they impose any other requirements.)

Special Studies Courses
Subject to the limitations below, students may earn credit for faculty-supervised Special Studies Courses involving topics of their own selection. An undergraduate taking one or more Special Studies Course must complete an application for each prior to enrolling.

Course Number
Ordinarily, Special Studies Courses are numbered 97, 98, or 99 for lower division and 197, 198, or 199 for upper division. The 97 and 197 courses are for individually arranged field studies, 98 and 198 courses are for directed group study, 99 and 199 courses are for individual independent study.

Limitations

1. Enrollment requires the prior consent of both the instructor who is to supervise the study and approval by the department chair. Applicants must demonstrate that their backgrounds are adequate for the proposed study.

2. Students must have completed at least 30 units of undergraduate study at UCSD and must have attained a UCSD Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 to enroll in a lower-division Special Studies Course, and at least 90 units of undergraduate study with a GPA of at least 2.5 to enroll in an upper-division Special Studies Course.

3. A student may enroll for no more than a total of four units of 98, 99, 198, or 199 Special Studies Courses during any one term.

4. Except as may otherwise be authorized by the CEP Subcommittee on Undergraduate Courses (for example, honors programs), only a grade of P (Pass) or NP (No Pass) may be assigned for undergraduates enrolled in Special Studies Courses.

5. Subject to the approval of the CEP Subcommittee on Undergraduate Courses, a department may impose additional limitations on its supervised Special Studies Courses.

EXCEPTIONS
On the advice of the instructor(s) and the department chair concerned, the provost of a student’s college may authorize exceptions to limitations (2) and (3) above.

Procedures

1. Students must complete an “Application for UCSD Special Studies Course Enrollment” available in department offices, then secure instructor and department chair approval.

2. Students must submit an approved form to the Office of the Registrar to complete enrollment.
